Welcome

The focus in the beginning of the school year is on creating connection and building a classroom community, as well as establishing your classroom management practices. During the first week of school, teach and positively reinforce classroom rules and expectations, as well as routines and transitions.

Our district is holding weekly circles, and we encourage you to hold a daily circle, to promote relationship-building and communication skills. Implementing this component of restorative practices during a morning check-in and/or afternoon check-out, will proactively build relationships and skills to prepare for when a restorative circle or meeting is needed. See my Restorative Practices and PBIS webpages for more information on these topics.

Our SEL instruction at Redwood will include teaching Second Step and MindUP. My recommendation is to rotate weeks between the two programs. Please include the Core Practice on a daily basis with your students, regardless of which program you are on for the week.

General Education teachers: Please create your online account with your activation key that can be found in your Second Step Kit at Second Step Website. You can also explore the online resources.  I have included lesson plans and videos that they created down below.

The CASEL SEL Core Competencies are important to learn and keep in mind while teaching all of your curriculum. The Core Competencies are: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. An image and explanation of each competency can be found here: CASEL SEL Core Competencies

The key to rolling these out instructionally is to keep in mind the acronym SAFE (Committee for Children at https://www.cfchildren.org/ ; https://www.secondstep.org/).

Sequenced–Connected activities to build skills (Using modeling, coaching, peer to peer listening exercises), cross-age partnering (buddy class etc…)

Active–Active forms of learning (picture role-playing, scenarios, etc.)

Focused–Focus on one competence at a time that builds personal and social skills

Explicit–Target specific social and emotional skills

Incorporating mindfulness into our SEL lessons is really important. Please check out these Mind Yeti videos which are vetted by the Committee for Children (Second Step) to supplement your Second Step lessons.

The goal is to rotate weekly teachings of Second Step and MindUP.  Each weekly lesson for both Second Step and MindUP has enough material with extension lessons and follow up activities to teach the lesson/topic every day for the week.

There are additional resources at Click here for Second Step COVID Resources. You can still view the lesson plans and videos created by Second Step staff down below, but some of the links in their lesson plans are broken.
