About Our School
Welcome to Redwood Elementary School
Redwood Elementary School is a preschool through second grade school nestled in the small coastal town of Fort Bragg, California, on the stunning Mendocino County North Coast. Serving children ages three through eight, Redwood is a place where young learners take their very first steps in education surrounded by a warm, close-knit community that cares deeply about every child's success.
We are proud to be one of six schools within the Fort Bragg Unified School District, and we are committed to making Redwood a place where children, families, staff, and community members all feel at home.
Our Mission
Everything we do at Redwood flows from this mission.
Kindness, safety, and responsibility are not just words on a wall — they are the foundation of how we treat one another every single day.
"Based on the three principals of kindness, safety and responsibility, we will create a school environment in which each person feels respected, included, and valued. We are committed to living these ideals so that children, staff, parents, and community members will experience Redwood as a happy, wholesome place to learn and grow."
Our Goals
Redwood's school goals align with those of the Fort Bragg Unified School District and guide our work each year:
- Close the achievement gap — ensuring every student has equitable access to a high-quality education
- Improve school culture — fostering an environment where all students feel safe, respected, and motivated to learn
- Increase student college and career readiness — building the academic habits and foundational skills students need for lifelong success
Our Students & Programs
Each year, Redwood's campus is home to between 350 and 400 students. Our school offers a full continuum of early elementary programs:
- 2 Preschool classes
- 4 Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classes
- 5 Kindergarten classes
- 4 First Grade classes
- 4 Second Grade classes
- 2 Special Day Classes (SDC)
- 1 Resource class
In addition to our regular school day, approximately 150 students participate in Kudos for Kids, our on-campus after-school program. Kudos for Kids provides academic support and enrichment activities from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM, giving families a safe, engaging place for children to continue learning and growing after the school day ends.
Redwood's campus is also home to North Coast Opportunities (NCO) Head Start, a community preschool program that provides additional early childhood education resources to families in our area.
Our History & Campus
Redwood Elementary has been a cornerstone of the Fort Bragg community since it first opened its doors in 1953. Over the decades, our campus has grown and evolved to better serve the needs of our students and families.
In the 1999–2000 school year, the school's buildings underwent a major modernization. More recently, our campus has seen exciting new additions:
- Summer 2023 — A brand-new preschool building was completed, housing a fully integrated preschool program with both morning and afternoon classes.
- 2024–2025 School Year — A new Transitional Kindergarten (TK) building was added to campus, featuring three dedicated TK classrooms, a TK-only playground, and office space for our after-school program. The main building also received an addition that now houses our new front office, Principal's office, and conference room.
These investments reflect our community's enduring commitment to giving Redwood's youngest learners the best possible start.
A Community School
At Redwood, we believe that great schools are built by great communities. We invite parents, guardians, and neighbors to be active partners in your child's education. Whether you are new to Redwood or have been part of our family for years, you belong here.
We are Redwood — and we are glad you are here.
